Need Office Storage Space? The Benefits of Self-Storage

A well-dressed man carrying a pile of documents

Businesses often need additional office storage solutions for excess inventory, materials, or equipment. Does your office look like this? If so, we can help.

This article is intended as a guide to help you decide if you need to rent a storage unit to free up office space and what types of self-storage units in Wichita, Kansas, might be available.

Take Advantage of Self-Storage to Expand Office Storage Space

In today's economy, businesses must find ways to save money and be more efficient. One way to do this is by using self-storage. Self-storage can be a great way for companies to store excess inventory, protect valuable assets, and organize their office space.

Here are some of the benefits of self-storage for businesses:

A simple and affordable way to keep excess items

Self-storage can provide businesses with a convenient and affordable way to expand their offices. Companies often use self-storage to store excess inventory, office supplies, archived documents, and seasonal decorations.

Self-storage providers offer a variety of unit sizes, and most facilities have 24-hour access to the units. These factors allow businesses to store their extra belongings without worrying about finding commercial storage space in their current location or home.

A more affordable way to move extra belongings

Self-storage is often much more affordable than hiring a moving company to move the extra belongings.

Self-storage providers offer a variety of unit sizes and prices, so businesses can find storage options that fit their needs.

Businesses looking for self-storage have a variety of unit sizes and prices to choose from, depending on their needs. A closet-sized unit might be enough for small businesses to store excess inventory or office supplies. Larger companies might need a unit the size of a garage to store equipment or products.

The cost of renting a business storage solution also varies depending on the size and location of the unit. Businesses should compare prices at different facilities to find the best deal. Some self-storage providers also offer discounts for long-term rentals. Note, though, that not all self-storage facilities in Wichita, KS, provide pricing options on their websites, so it is wise to call them and ask.

More amenities

Businesses can also take advantage of the amenities self-storage providers offer, such as climate-controlled units, drive-up access, and on-site security. Companies can use self-storage to store excess inventory, office supplies, or documents.

A great way to declutter and increase office storage space

Self-storage is an excellent way for businesses to free up space in their office or warehouse. A company can keep its office or warehouse organized and clutter-free by storing extra inventory, office equipment, or documents using self-storage. Additionally, self-storage is a great way to protect valuable items from damage or theft.

Self-Storage Size Guide: How Many Square Feet Do I Need?

When it comes to self-storage, size matters. How do you determine the size unit you require? The best way to select the right size is to calculate the total square feet you'll need.

To calculate, start by measuring the length and width of the items you plan to store. Multiply these numbers together to get the total square feet. For example, if you have a 10' x 10' extra storage space and want to store furniture, boxes, and other household items, your total square feet would be 100. Then don't forget you always have the additional space for stacking up if you'd like.

Keep in mind that not all items are stored equally. Furniture takes up more space than boxes, for example. So, consider that when calculating your total square footage if you're storing various items.

Factors to Consider When Selecting a Self-Storage Facility

There are a few factors you should consider before selecting a self-storage facility. Cost is one of those considerations, but it's not the only one. Here are some other things to consider:

  • Location - How close to your home or office is the storage facility? Is it accessible during regular business hours? Choosing a facility near you will always be an advantage since you won't have to travel far to get there.
  • Size of Unit - If you only store a few items, you may not need a large unit. On the other hand, if you're storing furniture or appliances, you'll need a unit that's at least the size of your belongings. To help you decide, consider the 5 Most Popular Self-Storage Sizes we offer at South Rock Storage facility.
  • Security - Does the storage facility have security cameras and a gated entrance? Knowing your facility monitors access to units at all times is essential.
  • Climate Control - If you're storing items that could be damaged by extreme temperatures or humidity, you'll want to find a storage facility with climate control. A climate control unit can maintain a relatively constant temperature and humidity.
  • Quick Access- Is there an accessible entrance that allows you to pull up directly into the storage area?

Final Thoughts

Self-storage is a convenient and affordable way for businesses to store excess belongings. By using self-storage, companies can keep their office and workspace clutter-free, improving efficiency and productivity.

Additionally, self-storage is an excellent option for businesses that are in the process of moving or downsizing if you are considering self-storage, research and choose a facility that meets your needs.

Sorry, You Can't Live in a Storage Unit...and Other Prohibited Items

You can't live in a storage unit as it differs from an apartment. Here's also a list of common prohibited items in storage units.

No, you can't live in a storage unit. This is probably the most common rule, and for a good reason. Self-storage is a great way to store your belongings and essential moving supplies when you don't have the space. It is not meant for human habitation. That's just one of the many items prohibited by most self-storage providers. While each facility has its own list of prohibited items to protect its clients' safety and security, some general rules apply to all. Hence, when selecting a facility, it is crucial to be aware of the list of commonly prohibited items, which may be a deal breaker for some people. This article will discuss commonly prohibited and limited things at a storage facility. Why You Can't Live in a Storage UnitSome people think they can live in a storage unit, but this is not the case. You cannot live in one mainly because they are not designed for residential purposes. There is no running water, no kitchen, and no bathroom. While some people may try to make it work, it is not ideal. These facilities are typically designed for long and short-term storage, meaning people will store their belongings for a while. Such an environment is not conducive for living, as you need a place where you can stay with acceptable living conditions.Additionally, these facilities are often closed off from the public, meaning that you would not have access to the same amenities that you would if you were living in a traditional apartment complex, home, or other legal housing option. You can't live in a storage unit. Same with your petsMany self-storage providers do not allow pets, and those that do allow pets have restrictions on the size and type of pet that can be stored.Pets are prohibited for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is that pets can damage property. They can scratch or bite the furniture, walls, and doors in the storage unit.Pets can also track in mud and dirt, damaging the storage unit's flooring. Some facilities also have rules against leaving food out and attracting pests like rats and cockroaches. Some facilities are in shared residential areas, and landlords do not want tenants with pets because they may cause noise or odor issues.Things to Avoid for Self StorageBelow are some items people mistakenly believe they can store in a self-storage unit. While some places, including South Rock, allow for the storage of some of these items, there may be restrictions.Hazardous MaterialsSelf-storage providers prohibit dangerous materials to protect their customers, employees, and the general public. Self-storage units are not designed to store hazardous materials like gasoline, oil, or pesticides. They are a closed environment, which can be dangerous if hazardous materials are present. For example, if a fire started in a storage unit with hazardous materials, the smoke from the fire could be toxic, and everyone in the vicinity could be harmed. Many facilities are located near residential neighborhoods, so it is essential to keep any potential dangers away from these areas.ChemicalsSome types of chemicals can damage the contents of a storage unit, and in some cases, it isn't even possible to store them. This includes bleach, gasoline, and other flammable or poisonous liquids.Chemicals are prohibited because they can corrode and damage the property stored in the facility.Chemicals can also be harmful to people and cause respiratory problems. To protect the safety of their tenants, facilities prohibit the storage of many chemicals.PerishablesSelf-storage is not the best place to store perishable items like food, beverages, and flowers. These items can become spoiled in a very short time, and the unit may never be able to be rented out again. There are a few reasons why most facilities prohibit perishables. The first reason is that it's challenging to keep track of what's in each unit when food items are present. The second reason is that food can attract insects and rodents and infest the entire facility. Many facilities have rules against storing perishable and unpackaged food to keep their units clean and pest-free.Batteries and Electrical ItemsIf you're looking for a safe place to store your belongings, a non-climate-controlled facility is not the place for batteries or electrical items. Some facilities don't allow these items due to their fire hazards. Not only could a battery start a fire, but it can also release harmful fumes that can be dangerous to both you and the other tenants in the facility.Battery-operated devices like video game systems, computers, tablets, and cell phones can also create a fire hazard. If one of these items were to malfunction or become damaged, it could quickly start a fire. Because of this fire hazard, many electronics and battery-operated devices should be stored in climate-controlled units, no matter their size.AppliancesSome units may allow the storage of appliances such as stoves, microwaves, and refrigerators. However, all appliances must be checked with the facility to ensure they are safe to store. In general, most facilities have restrictions or rules on appliances because they can create a fire hazard. Some appliances contain oil or gas that can easily ignite, leading to a dangerous fire. Many appliances take up a lot of space and can be challenging to move, which can cause problems for other tenants in the storage facility. Some appliances can also damage the property in the storage unit. Aside from cases where appliances have caused fires in these facilities, there is also the potential for water damage if a refrigerator leaks or a washing machine overflows.Illegal Weapons and SubstancesThe reasoning behind this rule is simple: self-storage businesses are a public place, and as such, illegal weapons and drugs cannot be stored on their property. In addition, by prohibiting these items, the facilities can help protect their customers and employees from potential harm. While it may be inconvenient to leave illegal weapons or substances at home, it is essential to remember that the safety of everyone involved is at stake. So if you're looking for somewhere to store your belongings, make sure you check the list of prohibited items first.Types of Self-Storage UnitsThere are many different types to choose from. You can rent storage space by the month or year, and there are many different sizes of units to choose from. The most common type is a traditional self-storage unit, a room or garage-sized unit you can rent by the month. These units are typically climate controlled, meaning they are kept at a steady temperature and humidity level to protect your belongings.Other popular types include:Vehicle StorageVehicle storage can be a great solution when you need to free up your garage or driveway space. Self-storage facilities offer indoor and outdoor parking spaces perfect for storing cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs, and other vehicles. You can typically rent a space by the month or year, and many facilities offer discounts for longer-term rentals. When choosing a self-storage facility for vehicle storage, be sure to ask about security features like locked gates and security cameras. You'll also want to ensure the facility is well-lit and has easy access so you can get to your car when needed. If you're looking for a climate-controlled environment, be sure to ask about the temperature and humidity levels in the facility's parking spaces.Vehicle storage can be a great way to keep your car safe and secure while freeing up space in your home or garage.Climate-controlled storage unitsThese units may be smaller than some of the larger traditional self-storage units available, but they offer all the benefits of climate control. They're perfect for storing documents, furniture, or any other items that need to be kept in a controlled environment.Final ThoughtsWhile storage units can be a convenient and affordable option for short-term storage, they are not suitable for long-term living. The lack of privacy, space, and amenities can make living in a storage unit uncomfortable and impractical. Storage 101: The 5 Kinds of Self Storage

There are five main types of self-storage, and each one caters to a different need. Read on to find out which type is right for you, and start storing your belongings today!

Self-storage is a great way to store your belongings when you don't have a lot of space. But with so many different types of self-storage, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. We're here to help. This article will discuss the five most common types of self-storage and help you decide which one is right for you based on your specific needs. What Are the Different Types of Self-Storage? 1. Traditional self-storage Traditional self-storage is the most common storage solution available today and the method we specialize in here at South Rock Storage! This method involves renting a storage unit from a company that specializes in self-storage and provides a variety of sizes to meet your needs. The first step in using traditional self-storage is to select the correct size unit for your needs. Units vary in size, so we must first determine what you need to store. For example, a smaller unit would likely suffice if you are looking to store documents and books. At the same time, more oversized items like furniture or machinery may require a much larger unit. Overall, traditional self-storage is an affordable, convenient option for storing all kinds of items safely and securely. 2. Portable self-storage Portable self-storage is a convenient and flexible solution for those who need to store extra belongings. Unlike traditional self-storage, you don't have to rent a space at a storage facility. Instead, the storage company will deliver a container to your home or business. You'll have a certain amount of time to fill it up, and then they'll pick it up and store it for you. Portable self-storage can be a great option if you're moving houses or renovating your home, as you'll have more control over when and where your belongings are stored. And because the container is delivered directly to you, it's easier to load than if you were renting a space at a storage facility. The downside is that accessing your stored items is not as easy as with traditional self-storage. Portable self-storage could be the perfect option if you're looking for a flexible and convenient storage solution. 3. Climate-controlled self-storage Climate-controlled self-storage is a type of storage typically kept at a constant temperature and humidity level to protect your belongings from damage caused by extreme temperatures. This type of storage is a good option for storing sensitive items, such as electronics or furniture. Climate-controlled self-storage units are often located indoors, where they are less likely to be exposed to extreme temperatures. In addition, climate-controlled units often have additional features, such as air filters and dehumidifiers, to further protect your belongings. If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions like Wichita, Kansas, or if you want to be extra cautious, climate-controlled self-storage may be the best option. 4. Vehicle self-storage When you need to store a vehicle for an extended period, your best option is a vehicle self-storage facility. These facilities are designed to keep cars, boats, RVs, and other vehicles. They are typically located inside a warehouse or large parking lot, which provides added security and protection for your vehicle. Vehicle self-storage facilities also typically have security cameras and gate access control to further deter crime. In addition, many facilities offer climate-controlled storage units to protect your vehicle from extreme weather conditions. When choosing a vehicle self-storage facility, select one that offers the security and protection features you require. 5. Mini-warehouse storage Mini-warehouse storage is an excellent option for businesses that need more space to store inventory or equipment. Unlike traditional self-storage units, which are typically much smaller, mini-warehouses offer a large amount of space for storing more oversized items and large quantities of supplies. Additionally, these storage facilities often provide additional amenities, such as climate control and security features, which are ideal for businesses with valuable inventory. Ultimately, mini-warehouse storage is a flexible and convenient solution for businesses that need more space while still having the peace of mind that their belongings are adequately protected. Which Type of Self-Storage Is Right for You? Now that you know the different types of self-storage, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Ultimately, the type of self-storage you choose will depend on your specific needs and budget. If you're looking for traditional self-storage, consider the size of your belongings and whether climate control is necessary. Climate-controlled self-storage may be the best option if you have sensitive items or are storing a vehicle. On the other hand, if you need a lot of space to store inventory or equipment, mini-warehouse storage may be the right choice. Whatever type of self-storage you choose, research your options and compare the different facilities carefully. Proper research will help ensure that you find a facility that meets all your needs and provides the best value for your money. Final Thoughts Self-storage is a fantastic solution for those who need extra space to store their belongings. With so many different types of self-storage, there's sure to be an option that's right for you. Consider your specific needs and budget when choosing a self-storage option. And, be sure to research your options and compare different facilities to find the best value for your money.
