8 Clever Climate Controlled Storage Ideas for a Small Home

A smart thermostat on the wall helps regulate the temperature in your home

At one point or another, most of us have looked around our homes and felt like we were running out of space. Whether it's because we've accumulated too many belongings or we have a growing family, a lack of space can be frustrating. Climate-controlled storage is the perfect solution for you.

These tips will help you make the most of your small home and keep your belongings safe and protected from the elements.

How to Maximize Your Space With Climate-Controlled Storage Ideas

1. Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature in your storage space.

If your home is not properly temperature regulated, it could be damaging your stored belongings. Too much heat (and excessive humidity) can cause things like furniture, electronics, and musical instruments to warp and discolor. Excessive humidity if left unchecked can lead to mold and mildew growth. And, if the temperature gets too cold, metal can become brittle and glass can crack.

A programmable thermostat is an easy way to maintain a comfortable temperature in your storage space, while also conserving energy. Simply set the thermostat to turn on when you need it and off when you don't, and you'll never have to worry about excess heat or cold damaging your belongings again.

Climate-controlled units at South Rock Storage are an excellent option if this sounds like something best handled by someone else.

2. Store your clothing in airtight containers to keep them fresh and free of wrinkles.

Airtight storage containers will keep your clothing looking its best and prevent it from becoming musty or wrinkled. Plus, airtight storage containers are great for preventing bugs and moths from getting to your clothing.

Make sure to find durable clear plastic with a snap-tight lid. You can stack multiple containers on top of each other, making them perfect for small spaces. And when you're ready to take your clothes out of storage, the clear plastic construction makes it easy to see what's inside each container.

3. Store out-of-season clothing in vacuum-sealed bags.

Seasonal clothing can take up a lot of space, especially if you live in an area with drastic temperature changes. If you want to free up some space, consider storing your out-of-season clothing in vacuum-sealed bags.

This will not only save space, but it will also keep your clothing from taking up valuable closet space. Vacuum-sealed bags are airtight, so they will protect your clothing from dust, moisture, and insects. Plus, they are easy to store and transport.

4. Place a dehumidifier in your storage area to keep your belongings from becoming damaged.

Keeping your storage area dry is important to protect your belongings from moisture damage. A dehumidifier can help to remove excess moisture from the air, keeping your storage area dry and preventing your belongings from becoming damaged.

Dehumidifiers come in a variety of sizes, so you can choose one that is appropriate for the size of your storage area. Be sure to empty the water reservoir regularly, as the dehumidifier will not be able to function properly if it becomes full. Alternatively, rent an indoor climate-controlled storage unit at South Rock Storage where temperatures remain consistent all year round without worrying about this step anymore!

5. Buy a beverage fridge that can be used as a storage unit.

If you are an avid wine collector, then you know how important it is to store your wine in a cool, dark place. But what if you could do more than just store your wine? What if you could also display it in a beautiful, stylish way? That's where a beverage fridge comes in.

A beverage fridge is a great addition to any home, and it can be used for much more than just storing wine. With its sleek design and adjustable shelves, a beverage fridge can also be used as a storage unit for other items, such as glassware, liquor, and even cigars. So if you're looking for a versatile piece of furniture that will help you organize your home and display your wine collection in style, then a beverage fridge is the perfect option for you.

7. Insulate your attic.

Everyone knows they need to insulate their attic but not everyone knows the true cost of not doing it properly.Other things that happen if the attic is not insulated are as follows:

Not only does this protect your belongings from extreme temperatures, but it also helps to keep your home more energy-efficient. The average home loses about 20-30% of its heat through the roof, and uninsulated attics are a major contributor to this heat loss. By insulating your attic, you can help to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy costs by about 15%.

Other things that happen if the attic is not insulated are as follows:

  • The pipes might freeze during the winter
  • In the summer, the heat will build up and could potentially cause damage to your belongings.

By keeping the heat in during the winter and the cool air in during the summer, you can save money on your energy bills. In addition, insulation can help to reduce noise pollution from outside sources.

8. Create an insulated wall.

Homeowners who are interested in saving energy and reducing their monthly utility bills should make sure that their homes are well insulated. Insulating walls, attics, and crawlspaces can help to keep heat in during the winter and cool air in during the summer, resulting in significant energy savings.

In addition, insulating your home can help to reduce noise pollution and make your home more comfortable overall. There are a variety of insulation materials available on the market, so it's important to consult with a professional to determine which type of insulation is best for your needs.

By taking the time to insulate your home properly, you can enjoy substantial savings on your energy bills for years to come. Moreover, it will also help to protect your belongings from damage caused by extreme temperatures.

Whether you need to store your boat for the winter or you're looking for long-term storage, we have a unit that will fit your needs. As you prepare to store with South Rock Storage, follow our helpful guide for proper storage to ensure your boat is ready for the next season. Please note that these are our recommendations. Do your research, and consult your owner's manual for specific instructions. Clean your boat To prepare your boat for storage, we recommend cleaning it thoroughly and drying it completely. This will help to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Be sure to clean all surfaces, including the hull, deck, upholstery, and carpets. If you have a canvas cover, clean it and ensure it is dry before storing it. Remove all items from the boat Before you store your boat, be sure to remove all items from the boat, including life jackets, fishing gear, and any other personal belongings. This will help to protect your belongings and prevent them from being damaged during storage. Drain all fluids It's crucial to drain all fluids from your boat before storing it. This includes fuel, oil, and coolant. If possible, open all hatches and compartments to allow air to circulate. Be sure to consult your owner's manual for specific instructions on how to do this. Use a dehumidifier If you are storing your boat in an enclosed space, it is essential to take measures to prevent mold and mildew from forming. One way to do this is to use a dehumidifier to help keep the air dry. Mold and mildew need moist conditions to grow, so by keeping the air dry and circulating, you can help to discourage their growth. Dehumidifiers work by removing moisture from the air, which can help prevent mold and mildew from taking hold. In addition, it is important to ensure that the space is well-ventilated. Remove the battery When you're getting your boat ready for storage, one of the most important things to do is to remove the battery. If you leave the battery in the boat, it's likely to leak and cause damage. The best way to avoid this is to remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. If you don't have a place to store the battery, you can always disconnect it from the boat and leave it outside. Just be sure to cover it so that it doesn't get wet or damaged by the elements. Taking these simple precautions can help prevent your battery from leaking and damaging your boat. Cover your boat If you're storing your boat for an extended time, we recommend covering it with a tarp. This will help to protect it from the elements and keep it clean while in storage. Tarps and shrink wrap are relatively inexpensive, and they can save you a lot of time and money in the long run by protecting your boat from the sun, wind, and rain. Repair damages before storage As the boating season closes, it's important to consider how you'll store your boat for the winter. While some people opt to keep their boat in the water year-round, this can be costly and cause wear and tear on the hull. For most people, storing the boat on land makes more sense. However, simply putting your boat in storage is not enough. It would be best if you took the time to prepare your boat for storage properly. This means fixing anything that is broken, worn, or damaged. By taking care of repairs now, you can avoid long wait times and higher costs later. Plus, you'll be able to hit the water as soon as the weather warms up! Double check your owner's manual Many people believe that their insurance will cover any damage that occurs to their boat. However, most carriers only provide coverage for accidents and acts of God, not damages caused by a lack of maintenance. You could face a hefty repair bill if your boat is not properly winterized or stored. Luckily, winterizing and storing your boat doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Taking a few simple precautions can help ensure that your boat stays in good condition all season long. Just be sure to consult the owner's manual for specific instructions on how to winterize and store your particular model. Prepare your boat to store While the requirements to store a boat are different in every case, some best practices apply to all. Please consult with the owner's manual specific to your boat, but we recommend the following at a minimum. Be sure to give your boat a thorough cleaning inside and out. Besides cleaning your boat, this gives you time to discover anything that might need repair before putting your boat away until the spring. After cleaning your boat, apply a rust inhibitor to your steering and control cables. Choose the right storage facility Regarding boat storage, there are a few things to consider to ensure your boat is adequately taken care of: First, you'll want to make sure the facility has proper security in place to deter any would-be thieves. Next, you'll want to confirm that the storage unit is big enough to accommodate your boat. Finally, you'll want to ask about the facility's policy on storing boats during inclement weather. This is important to know in case you need to make alternate arrangements for your boat in the event of a storm. By taking the time to find a storage facility that meets all of your needs, you can rest assured that your boat will be safe and sound until you're ready to hit the open water again. Being in the business since 2006, South Rock Storage understands the importance of finding the proper storage solution for your boat. That's why we offer secure, spacious storage units that can accommodate boats of all sizes. The above tips on preparing your boat for storage are only recommendations. Make sure to consult your owner's instruction manual for specific guidelines on how to prepare your boat for storage.
